Typical Visit

Keukenhof — literally "kitchen garden" — is a 32-hectare flower park in Lisse, 30 minutes south of Amsterdam, that opens for just eight weeks a year between mid-March and mid-May. Inside, 40 Dutch growers display 7 million bulbs across themed gardens, four pavilions and historic woodland paths. The narrow opening window plus 1.5 million visitors makes timed-entry tickets essential — combo bus + entry tickets from Schiphol or Amsterdam are the smoothest option. Plan your visit with our visitors guide, the latest opening hours and our best time to visit page.

Seven million bulbs, planted by hand

Every autumn, 40 Dutch flower growers plant seven million bulbs at Keukenhof — by hand, in carefully designed waves. The first crocuses break ground in late February; daffodils and hyacinths peak in early April; and the famous tulip ribbons reach full bloom around mid-April, lasting through to early May. Each year the planting design is completely new, so no two seasons look the same.

The garden was created in 1949 to showcase Dutch bulb growers to the world, and it's still owned and operated by the industry. The bulb fields you can see from the train and bus en route are working farms — stretching for kilometres in stripes of red, yellow, pink and white.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before your visit

When is Keukenhof open in 2026?
Keukenhof opens on 21 March 2026 and closes on 12 May 2026 — eight weeks total. Outside that window the garden is completely closed to the public. See our opening hours for daily times.
How much are tickets?
Adults €19.50 online (€22.50 at the door), children 4–17 €9, under 4 free. Combo bus + entry tickets from Amsterdam or Schiphol start at €30 adult.
Where exactly is Keukenhof?
Stationsweg 166A, Lisse — about 30 minutes south of Amsterdam by car or bus. The closest train stations are Leiden Centraal and Schiphol; from both, Keukenhof Express buses run direct. Full directions are on our visitors guide.
How long should I plan for the visit?
Most visitors spend 3 to 4 hours inside the garden. Add 1–2 hours travel each way from Amsterdam if you're using the bus.
When is peak bloom?
Tulips usually peak around mid-April, but it depends on the weather — a cold March pushes everything later, a warm March pulls it forward. The garden is impressive throughout the season, with crocuses early, daffodils and hyacinths in late March/early April, and tulips peaking mid-April.
Can I take photos?
Yes, encouraged — Keukenhof is one of the most photographed places on earth. Tripods are fine in most areas; drones are not allowed. See our rules & regulations page for full details.
Is Keukenhof wheelchair accessible?
Largely yes. Main paths are paved or hard gravel and most of the garden is reachable by wheelchair. Free wheelchair loan is available at the entrance — see our accessibility page for details.
Are children free?
Children under 4 enter free. Children 4–17 pay €9. There's a dedicated playground inside the garden plus a petting zoo — Keukenhof is genuinely family-friendly. See free & reduced tickets.
Can I bring a picnic?
Yes — picnics are welcome anywhere in the garden, and there are picnic tables near the windmill. The on-site cafés are decent but slow during peak hours.
Are the bulb fields outside the garden free?
Yes — the working bulb fields stretch for kilometres around Lisse and are free to walk or cycle through. Bike rental at the Keukenhof entrance is around €10/day. Don't walk into the rows or pick the flowers — they're commercial crops.
